What is Video Interaction Guidance?

Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a transformative intervention designed to enhance communication and strengthen relationships between caregivers and children. Rooted in attachment theory, VIG focuses on the positive aspects of interactions, aiming to build on existing strengths and foster emotional connections.

The VIG process is straightforward yet highly effective. It involves three primary steps: recording, reviewing, and reflecting. Initially, a VIG practitioner records short video clips of natural interactions between the caregiver and the child during everyday activities. These activities could be as simple as playing together, reading a book, or having a conversation. The goal is to capture genuine, spontaneous moments that reflect the everyday dynamics of their relationship.

Once the recording is complete, the VIG practitioner carefully reviews the film to identify instances of positive communication and successful interaction. These selected clips highlight moments where the caregiver and child are effectively engaging with each other – showing attunement, mutual enjoyment, and responsive communication. These clips serve as the foundation for the next step: the feedback session.

During the feedback session, (shared review) the practitioner and caregiver watch the selected video clips together. The caregiver is guided through a reflective process, encouraging them to observe their own behaviours and responses. This collaborative review helps the caregiver recognise their strengths and understand the impact of their positive interactions. It also provides an opportunity to discuss and develop strategies for enhancing these moments in future interactions.

The primary goal of VIG therapy is to empower caregivers by reinforcing their ability to enjoy their important relationships. By focusing on what is already working well, VIG builds confidence and competence, fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for emotional and developmental growth.

VIG has broad applications, benefiting not only parents but also teachers, social workers, and mental health professionals. Its evidence-based approach and focus on positive reinforcement make it a valuable tool for improving relationships and promoting healthy development in children.
